When choosing an abortion provider, it is important to find one that meets the patient’s needs. There are many different types of healthcare facilities that provide abortion services, such as private doctor’s offices, clinics, surgery centers, and hospitals. All abortion providers have a different way of doing things, and many have state requirements that they must follow. When researching abortion providers, get as must information as possible. The more the patient knows, the better the abortion experience will be.

Good abortion providers will answer all of the patient’s questions. If she is unsure of her decision, they will provide her with unbiased counseling and referrals for all of her pregnancy options so that she can make an informed decision for herself. The provider will give her scientifically accurate medical information about the various abortion procedures, the procedure’s safety and possible risks, pre- and post-operative instructions, and any state mandated abortion laws she must comply with. The provider should also treat her with respect and compassion, and offer access to supportive services after the procedure such as counseling and birth control. The patient deserves the best treatment and services available, and she has the right to be treated with dignity and kindness.

When calling a provider for information, have a list of questions ready. Here are some suggestions for questions:

  1. What types of abortion services do they offer?
  2. What will happen on the day of the appointment?
  3. Are the facility and the staff properly licensed?
  4. Are there special state requirements for minors?
  5. Are there special state requirements for counseling or waiting periods?
  6. How will the provider determine how many weeks pregnant the patient is?
  7. How many weeks of pregnancy does the provider offer abortion services up to?
  8. What is the cost of the abortion? And what does that include?
  9. Are there lab tests involved? Are they included in the cost?
  10. What types of payment (cash, credit, insurance, funding) does the facility accept?
  11. Are follow-up appointments available? Is the cost included?
  12. When are the appointments available?
  13. Will the patient be allowed to bring anyone with her to the appointment?
  14. Is there an opportunity for any last minute questions?
  15. What will I need to bring to my appointment?
  16. Should I expect protesters at the facility?

Be careful when looking for an abortion provider in the phonebook or on the internet. Over the last several years, there has been an increase in anti-abortion websites and informational materials as well as anti-abortion healthcare facilities. Some such sources have been found to disguise themselves as experts in pregnancy and abortion care, but have a private agenda that aims to dissuade the patient of her option to terminate a pregnancy. Beware of centers listed as “Pregnancy Crisis Centers” and avoid anything listed under “Abortion Alternatives." If the patient is unsure of her decision, the center should give the patient accurate information about all her choices – continuing the pregnancy, adoption, and terminating the pregnancy – and respect the patient for making the decision that is best for her.
